RECEIVING
• Unpack bisque and visually inspect for any cracks or breakage.
• You may test for cracks by pinging each piece with your fingernail or utensil. It should ring like a bell; a cracked piece will have a dull thud sound.
• Stoneware bisque is fragile, handle with care.
GLAZING
• Decorate your stoneware bisque with Stoneware glazes or other Mayco fired products. The appearance of some glazes may change at higher temperatures (cone 5/6). The cone 6 performance is noted on each colour’s label.
• Recede coats when using flowing glazes on the outside of vertical surfaces. Do this by applying the first coat to the entire ware. For the second coat, apply to entire area, with the exception of the bottom inch, and if a third coat is required, apply to all but the bottom two inches.
• If you are working with a crystal glaze, try to avoid heavy crystal placement near the bottom few inches. Crystals can also be rubbed off before firing. This will help eliminate the glaze from running on the kiln shelf during firing.
• Do not glaze the bottom of a ware with glaze that can stick to the shelf in firing. If a foot is present, avoid glazing or wipe glaze away with a wet sponge.
• Some Mayco Fundamental Underglazes can develop a glossier finish at higher temperatures and stick if a smooth bottom or foot with underglaze applied come into contact with the shelf. It is best to test colours.
• Mayco Engobe colours can be applied to smooth bottoms and footed areas with two coats and fired to kiln shelves coated with Mayco Kiln Wash AC001.
• Mayco Designer Liner is a great option for signing the bottoms of your pieces, as they will not stick to the kiln shelf.
FIRING
• Fire on clean, debris-free, kiln-washed shelves. Use Mayco Kiln Wash AC001 to protect your shelves before firing.
• Glaze fire from cone 5 (2167°F / 1186°C) to cone 6 (2232°F / 1222°C) on slow or medium speed with witness cones.
• Do not stilt your stoneware pieces.
• We recommend firing your stoneware bisque in the center of a whole shelf at least 1 inch from the edge. Do not allow ware to hang over the edge of a shelf. If firing a large piece with half shelves, be sure your shelves are close enough to touch.
• When firing mugs, turn the handles inward, away from the kiln elements.
USE
• Your stoneware bisque may be used in the microwave, dishwasher and/or oven (up to 425°F / 218°C).
• Use caution when handling hot ceramic items.
• Allow stoneware to cool completely before putting in the refrigerator or freezer.
• Treat your pottery pieces with the same love and care as fine art!
