LOWFIRE BISQUE: Tips for Glazing, Firing and Use

RECEIVING

•  Unpack bisque and visually inspect for any cracks or breakage.

•  You may test for cracks by pinging each piece with your fingernail or utensil. It should ring like a bell; a cracked piece will have a dull thud sound.

•  Low-fire (earthenware) bisque is fragile, handle with care.

GLAZING

•  Decorate your bisque with Mayco glazes or other non-fired products. Apply glazes according to directions on each bottle.

•  Recede coats when using flowing glazes on the outside of vertical surfaces. Do this by applying the first coat to the entire ware. For the second coat, apply to the entire area, with the exception of the bottom inch, and if a third coat is required, apply to all but the bottom two inches. If you are working with a Jungle Gem Crystal glaze, try to avoid heavy crystal placement near the bottom few inches. Crystals can also be rubbed off before firing. This will help eliminate the glaze from running on the kiln shelf during firing.

• Earthenware bisque should be fully glazed, including the bottoms. Do not dry foot earthenware shapes. For best results, glazes should be completely dry before firing.

FIRING

•  Fire earthenware bisque on kiln stilts. Be sure pieces are balanced on the stilts so they do not fall over.

•  Use Mayco Kiln Wash AC001 to protect your shelves before firing.

•  Glaze fire from cone 06 (1828°F / 998°C) - cone 05 (1915°F / 1046°C) with witness cones.

•  Do not over pack kiln shelves to allow for adequate airflow. Allow minimum clearance of 1” between shelves, kiln floor and walls and 1” around the thermocouple. Stagger shelves for better heat distribution.

USE

•  Earthenware is not recommended for microwave, oven, or dishwasher use. Handwashing your hand-painted creations is recommended.

•  Use caution when handling hot ceramic items. Avoid letting pieces bump against other pottery or objects to prevent chipping.

•  Treat your pottery pieces with the same love and care as fine art!
